Engine eating oil
Hi,
Question in the round: how much oil is your engines using? My V8 is eating 1 litre oil (20W50) on 1.000 km (621 miles), driving her ambitiously. I'm not really happy about this but on the other side it seems to be not that much. Ciao,
Marcus Schopen

Engine eating oil

Marcus,
I only have experience of my factory V8. Standard 3.5 engine except for 3.9 cam. Bores/pistons untouched since new and has dome about 120000 miles. On a round trip to Italy with mixed driving I would expect less than 0.5 litres used for the 3000 mile round trip, ie better than 10000km/litre. No doubt others will give their figures.

I wouldn’t be happy with 1 litre in 1,000 km either. Mine never uses more than 0.5 litre between oil changes. 3.9 engine and modified heads with valve stem oil seals (as fitted to the later V8).

That sounds like quite a lot to me, Marcus?

I've done a shade over 3000 miles in mine since I bought it and topped it up only twice from half way up the indicator on the dip stick?

Are you burning it or leaking it? Check the back of the rocker covers. It's quite common to see oil oozing down onto the exhaust flanges around number 7 and number 8.

It might also be worth checking the flame traps. If these become gummed up with crud then rover v8's will start to burn a bit of oil. You can just pull them off and soak them in diesel for a couple of days and blast them through with some compressed air if you can't find new ones locally at a reasonable price and want to clean up what you've got.

What colour is the exhaust gas when you rev it once she's warmed through? Smoke with a blueish tinge to it is indicative of oil burning in a petrol engine.

What oil pressure does she run at when hot and idling?

Have you done a compression test yet? If so, what were your wet and dry readings?
