Carb needles
I have a factory V8 with the following set up: KN filters, free flow exhaust, tubular manifolds, SD1 heads, cam unknown. The engine produces some 128 HP at the wheels and has an excellent tickover. The carbs are jetted with BBA needles, CO is set at 4,5%. At motorway speed the plugs get white, so the mixture is too leen. Which needles should I try first. Kind regards,

Carb needles
A useful three page pair of articles on SU needle choice and rolling road tests was contributed by Gordon Hesketh-Jones and published in the four page V8 Newsletter in Safety Fast! in April 2009. Prior to that in January 2009 Alan Rennie contributed an article on rolling road tests at Aldon Engineering.

I have created a new PDF with Gordon's two articles together with a new information gateway on "SU needles selection & rolling road tests for an MGBGTV8" which you can reach using the large rollover on the RHS of the V8 website homepage. You can see Gordon's article via a link on that gateway. The link is:

Gordon's first article provides a detailed description with SU needle profile charts for seven needles on the MGBGTV8. His second article on a rolling road test session has charts showing the power and torque curves. His V8 was fitted with K&N air filters. I hope this information will help you with considering alternative SU needles.

BTW you could very easily trace a copy of the original SU needles article in the V8 Newsletter (April 2009) by simply typing in the search box on the V8 website homepage the key words "SU needles for an MGBGTV8" and the first link that pops up is to that article. That search engine covers the whole of the V8 website and can dig deep and retrieve information - very useful now the V8 website has some 3,700 webpages and is 1.7GB on the webhost's server. Do check out the search tips as the search box and the detailed and regularly maintained Indexes to the two workshop notes series do enable members to retrieve a great deal of useful information, much of which is available online.
