Rhein in Flammen
I thought this topic might interest our bulletin Board readers.
At this time, 11.08 the second Saturday in August, we have a very popular festival called "Rhine in Flames."
It all takes place in Koblenz and on the banks of the Rhine, including the Deutsche Eck itself which is where the rivers Rhine and Mosel join. Opposite the Deutsche Eck, on the other side of the Rhine, there is a fortress called the Ehrenbreitstein from which the firework display takes place at 23:00 hrs. In the meantime there are all sorts of stands playing music and liberal glasses of wine and beer are constantly being consumed. Many, many tourists from all over the world gather here for the occasion.
At dusk an armada of 70 passenger boats slowly wend their way down the Rhine from Spay/Braubach full of expectant visitors and locals. As they proceed down river both banks are lit up with red flares which is spectacular in itself. The ships assemble in front of Ehrenbreitstein and the Deutsche Eck awaiting the fireworks display, which is magnificent and lasts roughly 30 minutes or so, accompanied by appropriate music.
I fully recommend the event which can be accompanied by a trip down the Mosel or Rhine rivers. Many tourists arrive in the large, long river hotel boats from Holland on their way to either France or Switzerland.
We have enjoyed the event many times but elected to get out the RV8 for a lovely spin down the Mosel. At this time of the year, the vinyards are in full leaf, so that the grey slate sides of the river are obscured leaving the sides reflecting a beautiful shade of fresh green.
