My factory V8 has small bulb fitted into the grile immediately behind the MG badge, preumably to backlight it. Was this a standard fitting and is the bulb illuminated with the sidelights?

It works! Novatech happened to have the right bulb and it illuminated MG when the sidelights were on. Quite effective but not flashy. I will send photos to Victor.

Is this like an old Wolsley? If so, it sounds pretty cool but it certainly isn't OEM. Piccies?

Switch the sidelights on and have a look to see if the extra light works; if it does it works with the sidelights, if not, it doesn’t.

It’s Wolseley JC – my first car was a Wolseley 1500, I lowered the suspension, fitted a 1600 twin carb MGA spec engine (my first engine rebuild), Riley 1.5 brakes, 165 Pirelli tyres on MG Midget steel rims, 75watt spot lights, fog lights, numerous switches and gauges. I drove it more than 80 thousand miles and I have many happy memories. I sold it to buy my first MGB.

How cool is that, eh!? Like you said, real subtle and not at all ‘flash’. Good enough to be factory fit IMHO. I'm jealous! I wonder if I could come up with something for my rubber bumper car along the same sort of lines?

Very nice but sadly this is technically illegal (in the UK at least) as it shows a red light to the front. MG got into hot water way back in 1962 when some of the first MGB grille badges were found to be retro-reflective and so shone red when lit by an approaching car headlamp. The Wolseley badges got away with this because they showed white to the front.
